Andrey Rublev vs. Justin Engel Preview, Prediction and Betting Odds for ATP Hamburg Open 2025 Round of 16

Rudra Dubey

Veteran Rublev meets rising wildcard Engel in first-time showdown at Hamburg Open.

Third seed Andrey Rublev will square off against wildcard Justin Engel in the round of 16 at the ATP Hamburg Open, marking their first-ever meeting on tour. With no byes awarded in the 32-player main draw, Rublev opened his campaign with a solid straight-sets win over Damir Dzumhur. Engel, on the other hand, came through a gritty all-wildcard clash against Jan-Lennard Struff, edging out both sets in tightly contested tiebreakers.

Rublev already has silverware this season, having captured the Qatar Open, his 17th career singles title and notably the first tournament he’s won twice. His previous 16 titles all came at different events. On the opposite side of the net is 17-year-old newcomer Justin Engel, who only turned pro in 2024. The German teenager now faces the seasoned Russian, a decade older and a tour veteran since 2014.

Andrey Rublev vs. Justin Engel Preview

Rublev rebounded from an early Australian Open exit with a semifinal run at Open Occitanie and a quarterfinal in Rotterdam. His standout moment came in Doha, where he captured the Qatar Open, upsetting Jack Draper in three sets, with wins over Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alex de Minaur en route.

Since then, however, he has failed to progress beyond the round of 32, except for round-of-16 showings in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Now ranked No. 17, Rublev has an 11-11 record this season, with 147 aces and a 74% first-serve win rate, but a low 35% break point conversion highlights missed chances.

Engel, meanwhile, is just getting started. The 17-year-old turned pro in 2024 and holds a 1-2 record at the tour level. He’s claimed five ITF titles, including M15 Villach, becoming the youngest German since 2003 to win at that level, and added the most recent in Cadolzburg this January. In the rest of the events, though, his runs have largely ended in the opening rounds or the qualifiers.

Andrey Rublev vs. Justin Engel Prediction

While Rublev enters as the clear favorite with far more experience and a title already this season, his recent inconsistency and low break point conversion could leave the door slightly ajar. Engel, though untested at this level, has nothing to lose. But on paper, Rublev holds the edge.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
