David Benavidez: Dmitry Bivol’s Next Opponent?

In a major development, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has officially ordered undisputed light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol to face David Benavidez in his next bout. This order comes at an interesting time, as many fans and analysts had been speculating about a potential trilogy fight between Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

The two split their previous encounters, with Beterbiev winning the first clash and Bivol evening the score with a majority decision victory this past February in Saudi Arabia on “The Last Crescendo” card. Bivol currently sits at the top of the light heavyweight mountain with an impressive 24-1 record that includes 12 knockouts.

His technical proficiency and boxing IQ have made him one of the most respected champions in the sport. His redemption win against the hard-hitting Beterbiev solidified his status as the division’s king. On the other hand, Benavidez brings an unblemished 30-0 record with a fearsome 24 knockouts to the table. Benavidez has been destroying competition with his relentless pressure and devastating power.

The potential matchup between these two elite fighters has been simmering for some time. There’s even a backstory adding intrigue to this possible showdown. Film director Peter Berg once shared a story about Benavidez dropping Bivol during a sparring session years ago. While sparring stories should always be taken with a grain of salt, this tidbit has only fueled interest in seeing them face off officially.

Despite the WBC’s order, this fight isn’t set in stone just yet. Boxing politics and fighter preferences often complicate matters. The boxing world loves nothing more than a good trilogy. Their contrasting styles made for compelling viewing in their first two encounters.

Trilogy With Artur Beterbiev

Saudi Arabia’s influence on boxing can’t be ignored in this equation either. With their massive financial backing transforming the sport’s landscape, they could push for whichever fight they believe will generate the most interest. The kingdom has been instrumental in making previously “impossible” fights happen through their considerable resources.

In saying that, Turki Alalshikh had recently stated that he would love to make a third fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. Their previous two fights were close, and the third one is slated to be a final decision maker.

Whatever direction Dmitry Bivol chooses, boxing fans are in for a treat. Whether it’s a technical battle with the Benavidez or a trilogy bout with the fearsome Beterbiev, Bivol’s next fight promises to be one of the biggest boxing events of 2025!
