Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis was battling an infection that developed into pneumonia for some time. However, he was then discharged from hospital in March. Pope’s death at the age of 88 has prompted a nationwide period of mourning in Italy. Thus, affecting both professional and amateur sporting events across Italy.
Serie A announced via social media that all top-flight and Primavera 1 fixtures on April 21 were postponed. The affected matches include Torino vs Udinese, Cagliari vs Fiorentina, Genoa vs Lazio, and Parma vs Juventus. Juventus issued a statement of their own that read:
“Tonight’s match against Parma has been postponed until a later date following the death of Pope Francis. Juventus shares in the condolences of the Pontiff’s passing.”
The Primavera 1 youth league also saw games like Roma vs Udinese and Sampdoria vs Torino postponed. Not just these competitions, all Italian sporting events have been suspended for the weekend. However, FIGC have already found rescheduled dates for the games.
New Date: April 23, 2025
New Time: 12:30 PM ET
Given the tight Serie A calendar, the rescheduling of the matches could have been particularly tough for FIGC. There are only a handful of available dates, like April 28/29, May 6/7, May 13/14, and May 20/21 before the season ends.

However, scheduling could have be particularly tricky for clubs still competing in European competitions, like Fiorentina. They are also competing in the UEFA Conference League and will face Real Betis on May 1 and May 8.
Even so, it seems that the FIGC are not willing to put the date for the rescheduled matches for near the end of the season. Especially considering, they would’ve had to move the Cagliari vs Fiorentina match to no earlier than May 13. That’s why they have announced the Rescheduled dates for all four matches to April 23.
