World No. 3 Alexander Zverev faces a stern test in the form of reigning Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin in the quarterfinals on Monday night. Both players passed challenging Round of 16 encounters over the weekend to enter this match. Zverev progressed to the quarterfinal stage under rather unfortunate circumstances, as 14th seed Francisco Cerundolo was forced to retire midway through the second set. Something about the National Bank Open seems to ignite a fire in the belly of Popyrin. Prior to Toronto, the Australian hadn’t won back-to-back hard court matches all year long. With a below par 15-16 record across the season, Popyrin is still the underdog on paper. However, he is on a 10-match winning streak on Canadian shores, and his victories over Medvedev and Rune will boost his confidence to the fullest. The 18th seed will have to better his 21% break point conversion rate on hard courts to overcome ‘Sascha’ on Monday.
