Can the No. 2 seed win the Gstaad title?
Competing in his first match since suffering a shock loss in the 2025 Wimbledon Round of 128, Alexander Bublik faces national compatriot Alexander Shevchenko in the EFG Swiss Open. Thursday’s pre-quarterfinal will be a stern test for the No. 2 seed, who will be keen on getting back to winning ways. However, his fellow Kazakh has found form at the right time, and won’t make it easy for the 6’5” giant. Who will emerge on top?
Alexander Bublik was considered an outside favourite to make a deep run at Wimbledon this year. After all, the 28-year-old reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at Roland Garros, before regaining the grass court crown in Halle. Bublik was defeated by Munar in five sets, ending his English campaign in Round-1. The World No. 34 is currently 16-15 in 2025, including one championship run.

Alexander Shevchenko eased past 40-year-old Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka to book his spot in Round-2. The 24-year-old won his first main draw match of the year at the Rio Open, and also made the Round of 16 at the BMW Open in Munich. While Shevchenko is yet to get past the Round of 64 at Grand Slam events, he is showing promise towards getting back to his career-high World No. 45 ranking.
A serious statement in Gstaad 🫡

Alexander Bublik leads the head-to-head against Alexander Shevchenko by 1-0. Their only match was played at the 2024 Open Occitanie in Montpellier.
Coming face to face on the hard courts in France, Bublik needed three sets to down his lower ranked countryman. Shevchenko took advantage of Bublik’s lapses in concentration to grab the opener. However, the serve machine eventually got used to the pace of the court, and began serving much better in sets two and three. He closed out the match in fine style to take the advantage in this duel.

While it is hard to predict which version of Bublik we will get on Thursday, Shevchenko produced a reassuring performance against Wawrinka. The youngster played a compact game, and produced several forced errors from the Swiss veteran’s side. If he can neutralise the serve of Bublik and get him under pressure, he will certainly cause troubles for the powerhouse from a mental standpoint. We believe there could be some rust from Bublik’s side.
Prediction: Alexander Shevchenko in three sets.
