Aces Star A’ja Wilson Surpasses Katie Smith to Move Into Ninth Spot on WNBA’s All-Time Free Throw List

Las Vegas Aces center A’ja Wilson is truly unstoppable! On Wednesday, August 28, she led the Aces to their 12th straight win as they defeated the Atlanta Dream 81-75. Wilson dropped 34 points, nine rebounds, and one assist for the Aces. In 35 minutes of action, the two-time champion shot 13-21 (61.9%) from the field, 2-3 (66.7%) from beyond the arc and 6-8 (75%) from the free-throw line. The remarkable performance pushed Wilson to the ninth spot on the WNBA’s all-time free throw list.

Wilson surpassed former Seattle Storm star Katie Smith to grab the spot with 1,441 free throws. Smith, a two-time WNBA champion, recorded 1,440 free throws in her 17-year long career. This is not the only feat that the seven-time WNBA All-Star achieved during the closely-fought competition against the Dream. She now leads the league for the most 30-point games in the ongoing season with 11. This is for the second consecutive season that Wilson has led the charts of most 30-pt games in a season.

One of the league’s MVP candidates, Wilson has averaged 23.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists across 35 appearances for the Aces in the ongoing season. Moreover, she also surpassed Diana Taurasi for the most 30-point games before turning 30 years old, per Real Sports.

You know someone is a great player when they receive appreciation, applause and ‘MVP’ chants, in basketball’s case, from rival fans. Something similar happened with Wilson during the clash against Dream. In their fight for the No. 2 spot in the standings, Atlanta Dream hosted the Aces at Gateway Center Arena at College Park. The Aces, who were already on the back of 11 straight wins, were underdogs, while the Dream had home advantage.

However, what happened spoke volumes about Wilson’s stature in the league. In the final minute of the game when Wilson was at the free-throw line aiming for a win, the entire arena erupted with chants of ‘MVP’. It doesn’t matter if the momentum shifted with fans’ chants in the arena, but the Aces ended up securing a remarkable 81-75 win to solidify their grip in the second spot of the standings.
