High time the WNBA brings in changes?
WNBA legend and a three-time champion Candace Parker has called for a big change in the league as the Indiana Fever continue to struggle with multiple player injuries. Parker, who recently became the only second player in the league to have her jersey retired from multiple franchises, wants the WNBA to make a big change in the roster. Addressing the Indiana Fever’s injury struggles, she said that the roster size rules need to be changed.
Parker spoke on her “Post Moves” podcast with Indiana Fever star Aliyah Boston. She said, “(Aerial) Powers is the 17th player to wear the Fever uniform this season. And no, the WNBA did not change the rules about roster sizes. This is actually the case—17th player on an 11-woman roster.” The seven-time WNBA All-Star added, “I think it goes back to the cry of like, expand the roster. Because if you have someone that is the next man up with all of these injuries, at least they’re familiar with their offense.”

The Indiana Fever finished the 2024 WNBA season in the sixth spot with a 20-20 win-loss record. They entered the ongoing season with optimism and confidence in their cornerstone Caitlin Clark, who wreaked havoc in her debut season. They began the season on a promising note. But just when they emerged as one of the favorites to win the title, things went downhill.
Indiana Fever’s medical report looks like any WNBA follower’s nightmare. They lost three of their players to season-ending injuries. Earlier during their Fever’s 95-60 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on August 7, Sydney Colson suffered an ACL tear in her left knee during the opening quarter. Along with her, Aari McDonald suffered a broken bone in her right foot during the fourth quarter. The injuries sidelined them for the remainder of the season.
A couple of weeks later, Sophie Cunningham also suffered a torn MCL in her right knee. The injury took place following an in-game collision during the 99-93 win over the Connecticut Sun. It brought her season to an end. This is not it! Situation worsened for the Fever when reports emerged suggesting that Caitlin Clark could also remain out for the remainder of the season due to her groin injury and a bone bruise in her left ankle. Clark had already missed a few games with her left quad strain and a left groin strain earlier in the season.
Now, a right groin injury has kept her out for 16 straight fixtures. The injuries have limited her appearance in only 13 of Fever’s 38 games. While there is a positive update about her injury, no timeline is still set for her return. This has put Fever’s season and playoffs ambitions in jeopardy. However, things have gotten better for them in the last few games and the Fever are currently in the sixth spot with a 20-18 record.
