Why did CAA part ways with pass-rusher Haason Reddick?

Traded to the AFC East during the offseason, Haason Reddick made headlines when he didn’t show up following his initial press conference.

Instead, he opted for a holdout, demanding a new contract while accusing Joe Douglas and the Jets’ front office of backing out of a promised extension.

Reddick’s contract setup has him giving up nearly $800,000 for every missed game, totaling over $4 million so far. Since the Jets’ training camp started, he has also accumulated over $5 million in fines, which the NFL mandates and cannot waive.

On Thursday, Adam Schefter reported that Reddick’s representation, Creative Arts Agency (CAA) NFL, decided to part ways with the linebacker.

The holdout began in June

Reddick initiated his holdout back in June when he didn’t attend the Jets’ mandatory minicamp. SNY’s NFL Insider Connor Hughes clarified that the choice came directly from Reddick, not his agents.

In mid-September, Hughes mentioned there had been some discussions between Jets general manager Joe Douglas and Reddick’s then-agent Tory Dandy. However, Hughes noted that nothing substantial came from those conversations.

Reddick and Douglas last spoke on April 1, during Haason Reddick’s introductory press conference after finalizing the trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I’m happy to be around a group of guys like this, a talented roster such as this one,” Reddick shared in April about joining the Jets’ defense. “It’s gonna be fun, man. I don’t think anybody’s ready for what’s about to happen, but it’s gonna be fun and it’s gonna be fun to watch as well.”

At that time, Reddick, who was entering the final year of his contract, expressed that “all options are open” for a contract extension with the Jets. However, he made it clear that he was leaving those negotiations to his agent and the Jets’ GM.

Financial implications of Haason Reddick’s holdout

For the 2024 season, Reddick’s base salary was set at $14.25 million. Schefter reports that the Jets would have guaranteed his salary as a vested veteran if he remained on the roster for Week 1.

If Reddick continues his holdout throughout the 2024 season, he stands to lose around $21.75 million. This amount breaks down into $14.25 million from his base salary, $4.5 million in fines, and a $3 million forfeiture of his discretionary bonus (via Schefter).

A surprising twist in the Haason Reddick-Jets saga

SNY’s Connor Hughes highlighted the importance of the news released on Thursday, October 10.

“The wording of this is critical. CAA parted with Reddick — not the other way around. Was told when Reddick’s holdout began that he made the decision not to report to the Jets himself. It was not advice from his reps,” Hughes disclosed.

Adding another layer to the story, on September 24, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke on “The Pat McAfee Show.” Rodgers responded to an article from The Athletic that quoted anonymous agents criticizing the Jets as being in “complete disarray”

“I would say the culture is about the opposite of what that article said. I didn’t read the article, but just reading that headline there, it sounds like it was written by Haason Reddick’s agent. Former agent, I guess… possibly.”

Rodgers’ comment led to speculation that Reddick may have already parted ways with his agent, suggesting Rodgers may have unintentionally leaked the information.

It’s still unclear what Rodgers knew, if anything, about the situation, but the reality is now undeniable—Reddick remains without an agent, deep in a standoff with no clear resolution in sight.
