Fils received a first-round bye, while Carreno Busta battled past Canadian wildcard Liam Draxl in three sets to book the matchup. Fils returns to action after a brief hiatus, as the Frenchman was forced to retire from Roland Garros due to a lower back stress fracture, which also ruled him out of Wimbledon.

While his main draw form remains shaky, he’s posted solid results on the Challenger circuit, claiming a title in Tenerife, reaching another final in Tenerife II, and making quarterfinals in Girona, Madrid, and Lyon. Though he withdrew from Wimbledon with an abdominal issue, the veteran has shown flashes of his old self. He’s hit 37 aces this season, winning 72% on first serve, 25% on return, and converting 44% of 66 break point chances.
