The former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker reflects on recent setbacks and shares the comeback scenario!
Robert Whittaker has been through the wars more times than most fighters can handle. The former middleweight champion from Australia has faced killers like Israel Adesanya, Yoel Romero, and Khamzat Chimaev without ever backing down from a challenge. He has built a reputation as one of the most durable and respected fighters in the sport. And he is someone who always bounces back from setbacks with grace and determination.
But this latest stretch has been different for ‘The Reaper’ because he’s facing something he hasn’t dealt with for a long time. Back to back losses are new territory for a fighter who seemed almost unstoppable during his championship run. His recent split decision defeat to Reinier de Ridder at UFC Abu Dhabi marked his second consecutive loss. This was followed by his submission defeat to Khamzat Chimaev last year. At 34 years old, questions started swirling about whether age was finally catching up to him.
Whittaker took to social media a few days after the de Ridder fight to address his fans and critics directly. True to his character, he managed to stay upbeat even while processing a frustrating defeat. The fight was incredibly close, with media scores split right down the middle, making it one of those results that could spark debates for months among hardcore fans.
In his video message, Whittaker showed exactly why he’s remained such a fan favorite throughout his career ups and downs. He acknowledged his disappointment but refused to let it turn into despair or self pity. Instead, he focused on the positives he could take from the performance while being honest about the areas that need improvement.
“Okay everybody, it’s a couple days since the fight, thought I’d give you all an update. I’m disappointed but I’m not disheartened. There were a lot of things I liked about the fight, there were a lot of things I didn’t, but I’m gonna take it all, head back to the gym, sit with the team, pick it apart and then get back on the horse.”

This mature approach to handling defeat has separated him from fighters who make excuses when things don’t go their way. Rather than complaining about the decision or making excuses, Whittaker accepted the result with the class that has made him one of the most respected figures in MMA. He promised to head back to the gym with his team, and figure out how to get back on track!
