First career meeting between the two players.
No. 1 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova opens her account at the 2025 Bitpanda Hamburg Open against Dutch qualifier Eva Vedder on Wednesday. The Russian is searching for her second trophy of the 2025 season, after winning the title in Linz earlier this year. Meanwhile, Vedder is set to play her first tour-level main draw contest of the season. Who will emerge victorious?
Alexandrova has tallied some consistent performances on the WTA circuit. After a disappointing Round-1 exit in Melbourne Park, the 30-year-old bounced back with a title at the Linz Open. She went on to reach semifinals in Doha, Charleston and Stuttgart, before losing to eventual champion Coco Gauff at Roland Garros. Although she failed to add to her trophy cabinet on grass, Alexandrova comes into this match with eight wins across three tournaments on the greens.

Vedder made her WTA Tour debut at the 2023 Palermo Ladies Open – she lost to 7th seed Emma Navarro. The 25-year-old has been ranked as high as No. 221 in the world, and will be hoping for a solid outing in Germany to make her Top-200 debut. In the Hamburg qualifying event, Vedder was the No. 5 seed. She defeated Sonja Zhenikhova and Nicole Fossa Huergo en route to the main draw.

Everything points towards a straightforward victory for Ekaterina Alexandrova in this opening round encounter. The former Fed Cup winner is extremely powerful from the baseline, and enjoys being the player to inject pace into rallies. Vedder will be forced to play counter-punch tennis, allowing Alexandrova to go for the lines and tilt the game in her favour.
