Iga Swiatek vs. Liudmila Samsonova Wimbledon 2025 Quarterfinal Preview – Can the Former World No. 1 Enter Her Maiden Semifinal at All England?

Sankalp Harikrishnan

Fifth career meeting as both players look to enter maiden Wimbledon SF.

World No. 4 Iga Swiatek will bid to reach her first ever Wimbledon semifinal when she takes on Liudmila Samsonova of Russia in the 2025 Wimbledon Championships quarterfinal on Wednesday. The Polish veteran is undefeated against her counterpart, and she is yet to drop a set across their past three clashes. Here is all you need to know about their form ahead of the match-up:

Iga Swiatek Shuts Down Grass Court Critics at Wimbledon 2025

During the clay court swing, there were reports of Swiatek potentially skipping the grass court season – due to workload reasons as well as a lack of belief in her skillset on the surface. However, the 24-year-old has laid down a statement over the past fortnight. Swiatek reached the final in Bad Homburg, and dropped just one set en route to the Wimbledon 2025 last eight.

A former World No. 1, Iga Swiatek has endured a patchy 2025 season. Despite reaching five semifinals and three quarterfinals in her first nine events of the campaign, the Pole failed to enter a summit clash. She broke this streak by reaching the final in Bad Homburg, but losing to Jessica Pegula meant that her quest for a first title in over a year remains. The 8th seed has a 39-11 win-loss record this year.

Swiatek defeated Polina Kudermetova, Caty McNally, Danielle Collins and Clara Tauson to book her spot among the last eight women standing.

Liudmila Samsonova Proves That She is Silent But Deadly

Despite failing to add a trophy to her cabinet this year, Liudmila Samsonova has designed a solid season for herself. She started the year by reaching the semifinal in Adelaide, losing to Australian Open champion Madison Keys. After a quarterfinal finish at Indian Wells where she fell to top seed Aryna Sabalenka, the 26-year-old had a turbulent European swing. Yet, Samsonova always manages to bounce back right before a Grand Slam.

At the Internationaux de Strasbourg, Samsonova overhauled the likes of Paula Badosa and Danielle Collins to reach her first final of the season. Despite losing to Elena Rybakina, it gave her the confidence to eventually reach the Roland Garros pre-quarters for the first time. The World No. 19 is currently 24-15 this year, with a 73% service game success rate on this surface.

Samsonova beat Maya Joint, Yuliia Starodubtseva, Daria Kasatkina and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro en route to the quarterfinal contest vs Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek vs Liudmila Samsonova – Who Has the Edge in Recent Encounters?

Iga Swiatek has an unbeaten 4-0 head-to-head record vs Liudmila Samsonova, ahead of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. It is a rivalry that originated on German soil in 2022, and extends until present day. Wednesday’s quarterfinal encounter will be their first meeting on grass.

Coming face to face with the top seed in Stuttgart 2022, Samsonova grabbed the bull by the horns and took the attack to Swiatek. However, the now five-time Grand Slam champion managed to weather the storm and win 6-7(4) 6-4 7-5. Swiatek got a good read on her opponent and dished out two annihilations (6-1 6-0 in Dubai 2023 & 6-2 6-2 in Beijing 2023) in their next two meetings.

After three unsuccessful attempts, Samsonova booked a spot in the 2024 US Open Round of 16, where she would face Swiatek for the first time at a major. Unfortunately, the Russian failed to produce a single break point throughout the clash. Swiatek won 88% points on first serve to cruise to a 6-4 6-1 victory and maintain her 100% record against Samsonova.
