Josh Allen Scripts NFL History in Bills’ Dominant Win Over the Steelers

Josh Allen led the Buffalo Bills to an emphatic win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. After a dull first half that ended with the Steelers up 7-3, Allen and the Bills put up 23 unanswered points in the second half to claim a 26-7 victory. In doing so, Allen made history with yet another rushing touchdown.

Josh Allen Creates NFL History

Sitting on 75 career NFL rushing touchdowns throughout his tenure in the professional league, Bills quarterback Josh Allen scrambled his way from outside the Steelers’ 10-yard line to get into the endzone for a touchdown.

That touchdown run, which came at the start of the fourth quarter, put the Bills up 22-7 and was Allen’s 76th rushing touchdown. The reigning league MVP set a new NFL record after he overtook former Carolina Panthers signal-caller Cam Newton as the quarterback with the most career rushing touchdowns in the NFL.

Allen, who is currently in his eighth season in the NFL, has always been a dual-threat quarterback. However, his rushing touchdowns in the past three seasons have gone up quite a bit, with 15 in 2023, 12 in 2024, and now 11 from just 12 games this season.

Interestingly, apart from Allen and Cam Newton, there is only one other quarterback who has more than 60 rushing touchdowns. Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts currently sits on 63 rushing touchdowns, and he is sure to pass Newton himself within the next couple of seasons at the most.

Allen’s Impact on the Bills Offense

Excluding Allen’s rookie season in 2018, when he started 11 games and finished with a 5-6 record, leading to the Bills missing the playoffs, Allen has led the team to the postseason each of the following seasons.

Initially, he had a decent supporting cast on both sides of the ball, and on offense, he particularly had Stefon Diggs as his main target. The duo worked well together, but after Diggs left last season, Allen has had to shoulder much more responsibility. That has inadvertently led to him using his feet on plenty of occasions, more so on important downs.

The emergence of James Cook from the backfield has been a huge boost, no doubt, but even then, this Bills team rides on the success of its quarterback, be it through the air or on the ground.

Standing 6 feet 5 inches and weighing around 237 pounds, Allen is not the typical quarterback the league generally sees. His height, weight, and strength allow him to make plays using his legs that most signal callers would not even dream of.

So, the fact that he has broken the record as the quarterback with the most rushing touchdowns this early in his career is not that surprising after all.
