The Los Angeles Chargers hosted the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday for the Week 13 matchup between the two AFC West teams. Having won the first game of the season between the two sides, Sunday’s 31-14 victory ensured that the Chargers took the season sweep over the Raiders.

While both teams are trending in opposite directions, with the Raiders now officially out of playoff contention, this win was an important one for Los Angeles, which is battling for a spot in the postseason. Multiple injuries have already hit the Chargers this season, but the current status of quarterback Justin Herbert will have all Chargers fans holding their breath.

Justin Herbert Injury Scare

While it is unknown exactly when Herbert suffered his hand injury, the Chargers’ signal caller came out of the game for a while with what is apparently a break in his left hand. As the injury occurred on his non-throwing hand, Herbert was able to return to the field, but more clarity on the injury is to be expected later on Monday.

As a matter of fact, Chargers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh was able to confirm that Herbert will undergo surgery on Monday, but he was unable to tell whether Herbert would miss any games or not.

When asked about his injury in the postgame media session, Herbert was quick to point out that he feels he can play in next week’s game against the Eagles. The one advantage for the former first-round draft pick is that the Chargers will be playing Monday Night Football (MNF) next week, enabling Herbert an additional day’s worth of rest.

The sixth-year veteran QB finished the game, completing 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an interception as the Chargers moved closer to the Broncos and put some distance between themselves and the Chiefs in the AFC West.

Chargers Pushing for a Spot in the Playoffs

With an 8-4 record, the Chargers are still 2 games behind the 10-2 Denver Broncos in the AFC West, following the Broncos’ win over the Commanders on Sunday Night Football (SNF). If Herbert ends up missing a game or more, there could be serious pressure on the Chargers, especially considering the number of injuries they are already dealing with.

The AFC is quite tight at the moment, with three teams still in contention to make the playoffs. The Texans, Steelers, and Chiefs are all on the outside looking in, which means the room for error is marginal each passing week.
