Denver Broncos Shatter NFL Record After a Thrilling Comeback Win Over the Commanders

Eric Divakaran

The Denver Broncos are living a fairy tale in 2025. After snapping a long playoff drought by reaching the playoff last season, Sean Payton’s squad has taken another giant leap. Sitting at a sparkling 10-2 heading into December, the Broncos currently own the best record in the AFC alongside the Patriots, and have seized control of the AFC West, holding a two-game lead over both the Chargers and the Chiefs. Their latest chapter was written on Sunday, when they erased a deficit yet again to beat the Washington Commanders in overtime, 27-26, on a walk-off field goal.

Denver Broncos Record-Setting Resilience in One-Score Wars

No team in the NFL has mastered the art of the close game quite like these Broncos. Denver is now a staggering 8-2 in one-score contests this season- the most such victories in the league- and Sunday’s overtime thriller pushed them into the history books. With the win, the Broncos set an NFL record by winning their ninth consecutive game in which they trailed at some point, breaking the previous mark. Even more incredibly, Denver has trailed in all twelve games this year, but have still come away with 10 wins on the season.

That dramatic flip from 2024, when they went a dismal 1-6 in one-scores games, underscores the culture shift in the Mile High city, going from a losing team to a team that refuses to lose.

Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton Was Hyped After Their Latest Win

After the game, Sean Payton radiated confidence in his team’s newfound clutch gene.

“You do believe it can happen. There cannot be that false belief,” he said. “We don’t escape. We won.”

The Super Bowl-winning coach also pointed out that championship DNA is often forged in exactly these pressure-packed moments. “Pick a Super Bowl team and go look at that season,” he said. “You begin to build some momentum… it is a tough league.”

Despite the record, Denver’s +66 point differential remains modest, trailing eight other teams in the NFL and four other teams in the AFC, proof that these Broncos aren’t blowing doors off opponents, they’re simple finding ways to win. In a season defined by chaos and parity, that might be the most dangerous trait of all as they eye a first-round bye and a deep postseason run, potentially a Super Bowl win.

I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
