49ers’ RB Christian McCaffrey Aiming to Be First Player in NFL History to Achieve Rare Milestone

It is quite surprising to see the San Francisco 49ers fighting for the NFC West crown and making a push for the playoffs with an 8-4 record despite the multitude of injury issues they have had to contend with.

Not only have the 49ers lost several key members of the roster for multiple games, but their top two defenders, Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, are out for the season with injuries. Moreover, Brock Purdy’s contract extension also meant that the West Coast team had to let go of some exceptional talent in the offseason.

However, through all of that, one player stood tall and has carried the weight of the team on his broad shoulders. Running back Christian McCaffrey, who missed most of the 2024 NFL season due to injury, is doing everything in his power to keep the 49ers afloat as we inch closer to the business end of the regular season.

Christian McCaffrey Eyeing Historic Feat

49ers’ running back Christian McCaffrey is currently on pace to achieve the rare double of recording 1,000-plus rushing yards as well as 1,000-plus receiving yards in the same season.

The only three players to have ever achieved this phenomenal feat are Roger Craig, who did it with the 49ers in 1985, Marshall Faulk with the then St. Louis Rams in 1999, and Christian McCaffrey with the Carolina Panthers in 2019.

However, if McCaffrey accomplishes this feat once again this season, he would become the first player in NFL history to record such a historic feat twice. At present, the 29-year-old has 796 rushing yards and 785 receiving yards from 12 games, which means he still has another 5 games to go.

Through the first 12 games, McCaffrey is averaging 66 yards rushing and 65 yards receiving, and if he continues at this pace till the end of the regular season, he would easily be able to accomplish the feat.

McCaffrey Becomes Leading Ball Carrier and Pass Catcher

Not only has the former Panthers’ running back been a livewire on the field for the 49ers, but he is also leading the league in two categories. McCaffrey’s 217 carries top the charts with Colts’ Jonathan Taylor in second place with 205 carries.

Additionally, McCaffrey has 81 receptions this season, which is one more than Trey McBride, Puka Nacua, and Jaxon Sith-Njigba, who all have 80 thus far. What is intriguing is the fact that McCaffrey is leading the league in passes caught despite being a running back. That just goes to show the value he has brought to the 49ers’ offense this season.

With just about one-third of the regular season left, the 49ers have gotten some of their important players, such as George Kittle and Brock Purdy, back in the lineup. Yet, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the team are going through a weird contractual situation that could lead to him being released by the team. Once again, that could lead to more work for McCaffrey, both on the ground and through the air.
