Spain’s win against Georgia is a result that effectively sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup. However, it arrived with a storyline that extended far beyond the pitch. La Roja controlled the match and secured the points they needed. But a lot of focus was still on the unexpected absence of Lamine Yamal.

Yamal’s withdrawal from the squad resulted in him missing this month’s Spain’s fixtures. Spain’s performance against Georgia showed very few signs of disruption with a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal, and two more from Ferran Torres and Martin Zubimendi. The 18-year-old has become one of the most influential figures for Spain after numerous outstanding performances for La Roja. However, this time, he spent less than a day in camp before returning to Barcelona. What followed was a swirl of confusion. It happened largely because the news of his injury came later than expected.

The national team learned late that Yamal had undergone a medical procedure on the same morning that Spain’s camp opened. That delay reignited long-standing tensions between Spain and Barcelona. Earlier in the season, both sides had expressed concerns about how his playing time is being managed.
