Ben Shelton Continues to Break New Ground With Maiden Nitto ATP Finals Qualification at Paris Masters 2025

23-year-old joins Taylor Fritz as the second American in the draw.

World No. 7 Ben Shelton extended his breakthrough season with another accomplishment on Thursday. The American returned to his destructive best against Russian superstar Andrey Rublev, and won 7-6(6) 6-3 to enter the 2025 Rolex Paris Masters quarterfinals. In the process, he confirmed his first ever entry into the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals.

The result means that only two spots remain to be filled for the tournament in Turin. Shelton will feature for the very first time at the age of 23, following a terrific campaign that included his maiden Masters-1000 title in Canada. The 2025 edition of the ATP Finals will be the first time two Americans (Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz) will compete for the trophy since 2006 (James Blake and Andy Roddick).

The Paris Masters has brought about Shelton’s return to form – after a poor run of form since the US Open. A collegiate prodigy, the southpaw opened his account at the French capital against Wimbledon quarterfinalist Flavio Cobolli. Shelton was practically flawless on serve, and backed it up with another patient win over Rublev in the Round of 16. The No. 5 seed will start as an outer favorite for the championship as the weekend nears.

Looking Back at Ben Shelton’s 2025 Season

After losing his opening match of the year in Auckland, Ben Shelton announced himself with a statement semifinal finish at the Australian Open. During the European clay court swing, he reached the summit clash in Munich – enabling him to break into the Top-10 by June. Just the fourth American to do so since 1973, his subsequent performance on the grass courts included a semifinal in Stuttgart as well as the Wimbledon quarterfinal.

Following a semifinal outing in Washington DC, Ben Shelton beat the likes of Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz and Karen Khachanov to capture his maiden Masters-1000 title in Toronto. While an injury dented his progress at Flushing Meadows, he is slowly but surely regaining his lost touch. The 23-year-old awaits the winner of Jannik Sinner vs Francisco Cerundolo in the last eight.

The 2025 Nitto ATP Finals will be played between 9-16 November in Italy.
