Daniel Jones, Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr. Trinity Powers the Indianapolis Colts to 7–1 through Week 8

With a 7-1 record, the Indianapolis Colts are the best team in the NFL through 8 weeks!

The Indianapolis Colts are continuing with their strong start to the season with a resounding win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. With their latest win, the Colts now move to 7-1 and remain the top team in the league.

Even though the offensive trio of quarterback Daniel Jones, running back Jonathan Taylor, and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. are at the heart of the team’s success, the Colts have put together strong collective performances on both sides of the ball.

Looking at the extraordinary Colts’ offense this season, it is no wonder why they are 7-1 and one of the top contenders from the AFC. Indianapolis’ well-balanced attack through the air is complemented extremely well by its run game as well.

Currently, the Colts sit atop the league with an average of 385.3 yards per game. They rank fifth in passing yards per game with 250.9, and sixth in rushing with 134.4. But all that wouldn’t count for anything if they didn’t put up enough points on the board.

Luckily for the Colts, they are league leaders in that as well, averaging 33.8 points per game, a full three points better than the Dallas Cowboys in second place. Indianapolis’ 32 total touchdowns is also a league high, again 4 clear of the Cowboys in second place.

On defense, while the Colts have allowed 14 touchdowns through the air, they have been much better against the run, allowing only 4 touchdowns on the ground. They are also sixth in the league with 23 sacks, second in the league with 10 interceptions, and second in the league with a +8 turnover differential.

Daniel Jones whose career was on tenterhooks not too long ago has completely changed the negative narrative surrounding his play. Prior to the start of the season, Jones was 20-44-1 in his six-year career as a starter in the league.

With nothing happening in New York, Jones made the move to Indy this season and his fortunes have skyrocketed. After winning over the starting job from Anthony Richardson, Jones has become one of the top quarterbacks in the league through the first 8 weeks.

The 28-year-old third in the league with 2,062 passing yards, has a passer rating of 109.5, and has a healthy TD:INT ratio of 13:3. He also boasts a 71.2% completion percentage and has been consistently accurate.

Wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. may have just 443 receiving yards through 8 games this season, but he is still a top target in the endzone for Daniel Jones. In fact, Pittman already has 6 touchdown grabs, which is tied for 3rd in the league.

Jonathan Taylor Leads All Running Backs in Multiple Categories

So, while the Colts’ passing game is working well, the run game is performing even better. Jonathan Taylor has put the league on notice as he tops the charts with 850 rushing yards through 8 games. He is only one of two running backs to average over 100 rushing yards per game along with James Cook of the Buffalo Bills.

Taylor also leads the way with 12 rushing touchdowns, which is three more than Josh Jacobs of the Packers. But more importantly, Taylor just finished his third game this season with 3 rushing touchdowns, nobody else has more than 1 such game. What is even more impressive is how he has been able to pull off consistent big runs throughout the first 8 weeks of football.

In the Colts 38-14 week 8 win over the Titans, these three players balled out once again. Jones finished the game with 272 passing yards and 3 touchdowns, and completed 21 of 29 passes. Michael Pittman Jr. 8 receptions for 95 yards, and a touchdown, while Jonathan Taylor ran for 153 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Taylor also had 2 receptions, including 1 touchdown grab.

Overall, the Indianapolis Colts are playing football on another level this season. This was not a team from whom much was expected, and with the Houston Texans having stamped their authority over the NFC South these past couple of seasons, the Colts weren’t seen as this dominant force. It’s funny how things work out in the NFL, and with a few more wins, Indianapolis could already become the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season.
