As UFC expands its global reach with another Abu Dhabi fight card, this matchup could steal the show, with both women hungry to seize a career-defining opportunity.
Mackenzie Dern was caught off guard when UFC CEO Dana White announced that her UFC 321 fight against Virna Jandiroba on October 25, 2025, would be for the vacant strawweight title, left open after Zhang Weili’s move to challenge Valentina Shevchenko for the flyweight belt at UFC 322.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Dern revealed she was initially told about a potential interim title fight three to four weeks prior, only to learn via Instagram that she’d be competing for the undisputed belt. “I texted Tiki (manager), I’m like, wait, is it the real belt or the interim belt? He’s like, ‘Oh, it’s a real belt,'” Dern shared, expressing her excitement and gratitude for the unexpected opportunity to become the sixth strawweight champion in UFC history.
Dern, coming off back-to-back wins over Loopy Godinez and Amanda Ribas, holds a 2020 victory over Jandiroba, adding further interest to this rematch. Her confidence stems from her striking and elite grappling, which could challenge Jandiroba’s well-rounded game. Jandiroba, a submission specialist, has evolved quite a lot since their last meet, and can certainly beat Dern. While Dern did not learn about her title fight in the best way possible, she is however, grateful for the opportunity regardless.
With only five strawweight champions in UFC history, this fight offers Dern a chance to cement her name among the division’s elite.

mma I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
