Daniil Medvedev Gets Punishment for On-Court Outburst and Racket Abuse After 2025 US Open Exit

2021 champion Daniil Medvedev had a heartbreaking exit in the US Open after a five-set thriller against Benjamin Bonzi. The Frenchman handed him second straight Grand Slam first-round defeat as the former No. 1 had same result against Bonzi in the Wimbledon championship last month.

During the US Open opening round, Medvedev didn’t hold his emotions on Sunday night at Louis Armstrong Stadium and now, the Russian ace will serve fine for it. The four-time Grand Slam finalist played out a dramatic match against Bonzi and he couldn’t control his anger after the defeat which costed him a big punishment. Out of four Grand Slam matches, Medvedev won just game and his epic downfall is the big reason behind it.

Daniil Medvedev Fined For Over One-Third of his Prize Money after US Open Meltdown

The Russian former world number one has been docked $42,500 of his $110,000 prize money in the US Open after his poor on-court behavior. During the third set, a photographer walked out onto the court right before Bonzi was about to serve for the match. Medvedev lost his control and walked up to the chair official.

“He wants to go home, guys. He doesn’t like to be here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour,” Medvedev said to chair umpire Greg Allensworth. The match was stopped for around six minutes and chair umpire told the photographer to leave, and ruled that Bonzi would be allowed to replay his first serve. Later, the 2021 champion managed to take the set in tiebreak and denied the straight-set loss.

US Open considered his on-court behavior with chair umpire as the unsportsmanlike conduct and tournament referee handed a $30,000 fine on the Russian player. After losing the game, Medvedev opened up his frustration on his rackets and smashed them until it was left in pieces. Tournament referee Jake Garner sanctioned him an additional $12,500 fine for racket abuse.

Meanwhile, Medvedev was aware of the punishment and talked about his behavior in his press conference after the match: “I’m getting a big enough fine, so if I speak, I’m in big trouble, so I’m not gonna speak… [Reilly Opelka] got fined big time for this so I’m gonna get a big fine too.”

Medvedev had a disappointing campaign on the ATP tour this year. The four-time Slam finalists has slipped out of the top 10 for the first time in over six years. He had a terrific 18-4 record in the Grand Salm last year but this year, it was totally a different story.
