2025 US Open Results – Jakub Mensik, Casper Ruud Fall to Upset at the US Open after 5-round battles!

The 2025 US Open has just delivered a 1-2 punch of upsets to fans. Jakub Mensik and Casper Ruud, two of the more prominent stars, have exited the event in a similar fashion – after a hard-fought 5-round battle. However, for the teenage star Mensik, this could be a learning lesson.

But for Casper Ruud, this exit comes with a massive blow to his confidence after it caps a year to forget for the 26-year-old Norwegian.

Casper Ruud Admits He’s Out of Confidence After US Open Loss

The No. 12 seed Casper Ruud opened up about his 2025 struggles post-big upset loss to Raphael Collignon. Ruud has won a grand total of just 3 matches across all Grand Slams this year (he missed Wimbledon due to knee issues). Certainly, it’s been a tough year for Ruud, who revealed he’s struggling with confidence issues after his latest loss.

“I didn’t win that many matches to build up a lot of confidence in the matches,” Ruud said after the match. Later, the Norwegian admitted that his general time on court no longer gets boosted by his confidence. “I can just honestly say I don’t play with much confidence these days,” said Ruud. Even then, Ruud’s US Open loss isn’t anything short of heartbreaking.

The 26-year-old fell behind after losing the first set. However, he fought back against Collignon to secure the next two sets. Ahead 2-1, Ruud looked primed to win it all in the 4th set but ended up fizzling out. In the end, Ruud will be booking an early flight home after a 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 loss against Colligon.

Jakub Mensik Still Can’t Crack the Grand Slams

For a minute after Jakub Mensik’s Miami win, it seemed like the teenager was primed to be tennis’ next big thing. However, since then, things haven’t been smooth for the Czech star. In fact, one of the biggest drawbacks to Mensik’s game happens to be his relative lack of success in the best-of-5 tournaments like the Grand Slams. It was visible again during his match with the world No. 184 Ugo Blanchet.

Despite winning the first set 7-6(2), Mensik never really looked comfortable on the court. As a result, this grueling 4-hour and 23-minute contest featured constant momentum shifts with both participants exchanging sets. With 29 aces, Mensik did showcase his biggest strength, but his lack of break-point conversions hurt him. The 19-year-old could convert only 4 of his 9 break points.

After Blanchet won the 4th round, it increasingly became clear that he had the momentum. But to Mensik’s credit, the teenager pushed the match to a tiebreak. However, the Czech couldn’t finish things on his terms, and Blanchet won 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7). And that marked another early Grand Slam exit for the world No. 16.

So, as it stands, the 2025 US Open has already started to show its colors. However, the shocks are just getting started and it’ll be interesting to see who will fall next.
