The franchise was founded in 1997 and they are one of the eight original franchises of the WNBA. Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai have the majority stakes of this franchise. The duo also owns the NBA franchise, Brooklyn Nets. Barclays Center hosts Liberty’s all home games. Ellie the Elephant is their mascot which was introduced in 2021.

They were crowned as the champions in 2024, the season they entered the playoffs as the top seed in the East. They posted a 32-8 season record. In the Finals, they took down the four-time champion, Minnesota Lynx 4-1 to lift their maiden WNBA championship.
