Antoine Griezmann Commits to Atletico Madrid Until 2027, Snubbing MLS Move

French Star Extends Stay at Wanda Metropolitano, Ending Rumors of MLS Switch.

Antoine Griezmann has extended his contract with Atletico Madrid for another year on top of his current contract. As per the new contract, he has secured his stay at the Spanish capital club until June 30, 2027. The French striker was majorly linked to a move to Major League Soccer, particularly to LAFC. 

Signing the extension, ends speculation about, he has put an end to all the speculations. The club confirmed in a statement on Monday, “Atletico and Griezmann have reached a deal to renew the French footballer’s contract until June 30, 2027.”

Griezmann is enduring a goal drought since February and Atleti just finished the season trophyless. Even so, the club has shown faith on its all-time top scorer. Griezmann, with 197 goals across two spells, has surpassed Atletico great Luis Aragones. He has also made 442 appearances, which is the eighth most in the club’s history.

The 2018 World Cup winner initially joined Atleti back in 2014 from Real Sociedad. He won the Europa League in 2018, the Spanish Super Cup in 2014, and the UEFA Super Cup in 2018 with the club. After a brief, underwhelming stint with Barcelona, he returned to the club in 2021 – first on loan, then permanently.

Turning Down MLS and LAFC

Griezmann had long been linked with a move to MLS, especially to LAFC. Reports suggested that the California-based club had made room for the French star by securing a temporary loan for Turkish international Cengiz Under. LAFC had envisioned reuniting Griezmann with fellow Frenchmen Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud.

However, clearly, the dream deal has now collapsed. If reports are true about LAFC being prepared to vacate a Designated Player spot for the striker, then the MLS Club surely have been dealt a heavy blow. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid will now benefit from some financial restructuring.

Griezmann’s extension will allow the club to spread his €8 million net salary evenly over two seasons. This will include then help with their wage bill. Looking ahead, Atletico Madrid will also be taking part in the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. 

They will face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in their opening match on June 15. Griezmann’s presence and leadership will be crucial in that match and beyond as the club prepares for this high-profile tournament. Atleti will be relying on him to deliver at the big stage.
