Champions League Best Goalkeeper of the Season: Who is Leading the Race?

Yann Sommer Is Competing With David Raya, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Others for the best Goalkeeper of the Season title.

The 2024-25 UEFA Champions League is set to conclude with a blockbuster clash between PSG and Inter Milan on Saturday. The race for the best is also drawing to a definitive close with the final. Nerazzurri and Les Parisiens may be meeting in the final with the winning team’s fate undecided. However, the best goalkeeper’s fate has been almost confirmed.

Goalkeeping brilliance has been key throughout this year’s campaign. Goalkeepers like, Yann Sommer, Gianluigi Donnarumma, David Raya, Wojciech Szczesny, Alisson Becker doled out some of their career’s best performances this season to even decide matches. Yet, only one remains uncatchable heading into the last match of the tournament.

Yann Sommer

Yann Sommer has been a rock between the sticks for Inter Milan this season. He has amassed a total of seven clean sheets en route to the final. His experience and composure have been vital for the Nerazzurri. Especially during knockout ties against Bayern and Barcelona.

With just one match left, Sommer has the opportunity to finish with eight clean sheets. But, that won’t come easy in the Champions League final considering PSG is a high-attacking side. However, even if he concedes, his current tally ensures that he leads standing for the best goalkeepers.

David Raya

David Raya has been a revelation for Arsenal this campaign. He has played a major role in their deep run into the competition. He accumulated a total of six clean sheets from tight matches for Arsenal. They particularly came during the group stage and Round of 16 gaames. However, Arsenal’s semi-final exit at the hands of PSG has ruled out any further chance of improvement. Hence, Raya has been left one clean sheet shy of Sommer’s mark.

Gianluigi Donnarumma

PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma has also been outstanding throughout the campaign. He has collected five clean sheets so far. He has a chance to register a sixth in the final. If he manages, that would leave him tied with Raya. However, even a perfect performance against Inter won’t be enough for him to catch Sommer. Hence, the Italian goalkeeper will fall short in the race for the top goalkeeper’s honor.

Even before the final kicks off, Inter Milan’s veteran shot-stopper seems to have already secured his individual accolade.
