Bayer Leverkusen Star To Undergo Bayern Munich Medical This Week

The German was a consistent presence as Bayer Leverkusen made history in 2024 by clinching the Bundesliga title.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah is set to undergo his medical at Bayern Munich this week. The Bavarian giants are reportedly very close to securing the German international’s signature. Tah has been a long-time target for Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany. Tah is seen as a key piece in Bayern’s defensive rebuild and could be an important figure in their FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.

According to Sky Sport’s Florian Plettenberg, the 28-year-old centre-back will complete his medical on Wednesday and is expected to sign a long-term contract with Bayern until 2029. Notably, Tah verbally agreed to join Bayern last Friday. The German defender has been at the heart of Leverkusen’s defence for the last ten seasons. He was a consistent presence at the back as Leverkusen made history in 2024 by clinching the Bundesliga title. Notably, the team accumulated a record 90 points as they went the whole season unbeaten.

Bayern Want Tah To Take Part in the Club World Cup

However, a sticking point remains between the two clubs. While Tah is due to join Bayern officially on July 1 as a free agent, the Munich side are eager to have him registered in time for the group stages of the Club World Cup, which begins on 15th June in the United States. That would require Bayer Leverkusen to release him early for a fee reportedly in the region of €1 million.

At present, Bayern are hesitant to pay that fee, which could mean Tah only becomes eligible to play from the quarterfinal stage onwards. Still, Bayern are optimistic that an agreement can be reached soon with both sides currently engaged in negotiations.

Meanwhile, a summer of transition is underway at Bayer Leverkusen. On Monday, the club confirmed Erik ten Hag as their new manager. With key players such as Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, and Florian Wirtz all linked with moves away, Ten Hag will be tasked with leading a major squad overhaul heading into the 2025–26 campaign.
