Jessica Bouzas Maneiro delivers a masterclass taking out the ninth seed in a statement win!
The ninth seed at this year’s French Open, Emma Navarro, took on Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in their first-round encounter, which ended in a shocking 6-0, 6-1 thrashing at the hands of the Spanish tennis player. The American was completely outplayed in a match that lasted only 57 minutes.
Coming into this match with a 17-12 record this year, Navarro hadn’t had a successful clay season, and that showed in her match today against her 68th-ranked opponent. While this match was thought to be a closely contested one, a blowout of this caliber was not on the cards.

The 22-year-old Spanish player set the tone of the match very early when she completely dominated her American counterpart to the tune of serving a first-set bagel. Bouzas Maneiro jumped out to an early lead, earning a break in the very first game, which lasted seven minutes.
The Spaniard was moving well on the court, coming up with winners from a backhand slice and an overhead lob, while her opponent struggled with forced and unforced errors. The youngster took the opening set when Navarro sent a backhand down the line far wide.

Navarro clearly struggled with her serve, landing just 39% of her first serves in the opening set, while winning under 50% of the points on her first serve. On the contrary, Bouzas Maneiro landed 68% of her first serves, winning 69% of the points.
The story was similar for receiving games as well, with the Spaniard winning 15 of 23 receiving points, while Navarro could muster only 6 of 19 receiving points. More importantly, Bouzas Maneiro converted 3 of the 7 break point chances that came her way, while Navarro didn’t have a single opportunity to break.
The second set was no different as Bouzas Maneiro again gained control of the set, breaking in the very first game with a thunderous forehand winner. Racing to a 3-0 lead in the second set following a down-the-line pass as Navarro attempted to come to the net, the writing was on the wall for the ninth seed.
The only saving grace for Navarro came when her opponent double-faulted twice in the sixth game while up 5-0 and serving for the match, allowing Navarro to avoid a much more humiliating double bagel. The Spaniard then put Navarro out of her misery as another break of serve ended the match in fine fashion.
Overall, Bouzas Maneiro won 71% of her first serve points to just 44% for Navarro, and the Spaniard capitalized on 7 break points while the American could only manage to break serve once. The overall winners’ ratio was also lopsided, with Bouzas Maneiro hitting 15 to her opponent’s 4.
With such a strong opening round performance under her belt, Bouzas Maneiro will take plenty of confidence into the second round, where she awaits the winner of Diane Parry and Robin Montgomery.

It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
