On the opening day of the 2025 French Open main draws, Roland Garros paid a heartfelt tribute to 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, who retired last year. The stands of Roland Garros hushed as a heartfelt video played, telling Nadal’s extraordinary journey. His laughter, tears, and relentless battles on the clay court made him the undisputed ‘King of Clay.’

Watching the tribute unfold on the giant screen, Rafa’s eyes filled with tears, reflecting a profound gratitude and a farewell to the sport that defined him. The video ended simply but powerfully: “Merci, Rafa.” The crowd erupted into applause, whistles, and the unmistakable chant of “Rafa! Rafa!” He said, voice thick with emotion, “My infinite gratitude to Roland Garros.”

Everywhere, the same clay-colored T-shirts were worn, a sea of fans and fellow players alike paying tribute. Among the honored guests were Toni Nadal, Rafa’s uncle and lifelong mentor; Rafa’s wife, and two-year-old son, Rafael Jr., visibly moved by the ceremony. Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek joined too.

In his heartfelt speech, he called Roland Garros “the most important tennis court of my career.” He recounted the incredible story that, “In 2005, I played here for the first time, and my first great experience was the match against my childhood friend and rival, Richard Gasquet. Since that moment, I fully understood what Roland-Garros meant.”

Nadal Thanks His Uncle for the Role in His Journey

Tears welled up as Rafa thanked his uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, who shaped his journey from day one until 2017. Rafa said, “Toni, you are the reason I am here. Thank you for dedicating a large part of your life to me. You trained me, made me suffer, made me laugh… What we experienced wasn’t always easy, but it was worth it.”

He admitted how hard it is to express certain emotions but made it clear just how deeply grateful he is to Toni for his sacrifices over the years, calling him “the best coach I could have had.”

“After all these years fighting for everything, it’s incredible how time changes the perspective of everything,” Rafa said, acknowledging the evolution of his rivalries. He reflected on the pressure and emotions they once shared as fierce competitors, now replaced by mutual respect and appreciation.

Rafa said, “In the end, we all achieved our dreams. We became tennis players. We played the most important stages of our careers. I think we built extraordinary rivalries, but at the same time, in the right way. We showed the world that we could fight as hard as possible while being good colleagues and respecting each other. And for me, it means a lot that you are all here.”

Nadal’s Lasting Footprint on Tennis History

Rafael Nadal was presented with a trophy by FFT president Gilles Moretton and Roland-Garros director Amélie Mauresmo and received the lasting honor of having his footprints and record number of titles forever etched at Court Philippe-Chatrier.
