Casper Ruud vs. Jaume Munar Head-to-Head and Prediction for ATP Italian Open 2025 Round of 16

The Playoffs News Team

Familiar foes meet again in high-stakes clay clash

Sixth seed Casper Ruud is set for a fourth-round duel with Jaume Munar at the Italian Open, marking their sixth career meeting. The Norwegian kicked off his campaign in the second round, receiving a first-round bye, and battled past Alexander Bublik in three sets.

In the third round, he took on local favorite Matteo Berrettini. After winning the opening set, Ruud advanced when Berrettini retired due to an abdominal injury, his second such setback this season after withdrawing in Madrid.

On the other side, Munar has been on a giant-killing run. The unseeded Spaniard began with a three-set win over qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera before taking down 12th seed Ben Shelton and 22nd seed Sebastian Korda, both in straight sets, to punch his ticket to the Round of 16.

Casper Ruud vs. Jaume Munar Preview

Ruud is hitting his stride just when it matters most, even if his season, on paper, appears a bit uneven. After a second-round exit at the Australian Open, the Norwegian picked up steam with a runner-up finish at the Dallas Open, falling to Denis Shapovalov in the final.

What followed was a brief lull, as he failed to advance past the Round of 16 in several events. But Ruud reignited in Barcelona with a solid quarterfinal run and then backed it up with a stunning finals appearance in Madrid, winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title by defeating Jack Draper in three sets.

Statistically, the world No. 7’s resurgence is no fluke. Ruud has racked up 130 aces and is winning 71% of his first-serve points, a clear sign of confidence from the baseline. He’s also converted 37% of his 176 break-point opportunities, underscoring a newfound consistency in key moments.

Ironically, Munar’s first two losses of the season came at the hands of Ruud. The Norwegian ousted him in the opening round of the Australian Open and again in the Dallas Open semifinals. That Dallas run remains Munar’s deepest this year; in all other events, he has failed to move beyond the Round of 16.

Still, the world No. 66 has shown signs of promise. He holds a 10-9 record this season, backed by a solid 72% win rate on first-serve points and 79 aces. He’s also made the most of his chances, converting 44% of 133 break-point opportunities. However, there’s room for improvement in his return game, winning just 30% of first-serve return points, and he’s saved only 59% of 116 break points faced.

Casper Ruud vs. Jaume Munar Head-to-Head Record

Casper Ruud holds a commanding 4-1 lead in his head-to-head against Jaume Munar, but their rivalry has never lacked drama. Even the matches that ended in straight sets were anything but routine; take their 2022 clash in Gstaad, where both sets went to tiebreaks. Their first encounter dates back to 2018 in Bastad, where Ruud staged a gritty comeback to win in three sets, sealing it with a bagel in the decider.

They wouldn’t meet again until four years later, at the Gstaad quarterfinals in 2022, where Ruud once again prevailed in straight sets. Just months later, Munar finally broke through. In Tokyo, he delivered a clinical straight-sets win to notch his first victory in the rivalry.

Since then, however, Ruud has reasserted his dominance. In 2025, the duo met twice, first in Melbourne at the Australian Open, where Ruud survived a grueling five-set battle, and then in Dallas, where he edged Munar again in a tight three-set semifinal.

Now, as they prepare to face off for the sixth time, the third time this season, at the Italian Open, the stakes are high. A win for Munar would mark his first over Ruud in three years and his first on clay, plus a spot in the quarterfinals. But with the Norwegian in strong form, he remains the favorite to extend his streak and tighten his grip on this compelling rivalry.

Casper Ruud vs. Jaume Munar Prediction

Ruud, with his recent title, solid clay form and head-to-head lead, is the favorite. While Munar has shown resilience, especially on clay, Ruud’s consistency should prevail in straight sets. However, the Spaniard has played some of his best tennis in Rome, dispatching two seeded Americans, Ben Shelton and Sebastian Korda, without dropping a set.

Prediction: Casper Ruud in straight sets
