Clash in Rome: Can Bouzas Challenge Svitolina’s Momentum?
The Italian Open has reached the second round, and today’s draw features a familiar matchup: Elina Svitolina vs. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, meeting for the third time in their careers.
Svitolina enters the contest in strong form. The Ukrainian claimed her 18th career singles title at the Open de Rouen and has consistently made deep runs this season. She opened her year with a quarterfinal run in Melbourne, falling to Madison Keys in a tight three-setter. At Indian Wells, she notched impressive wins over Danielle Collins and Jessica Pegula before a surprise loss to teenager Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals. After her title in Rouen, she pushed through to the semifinals in Madrid, where world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka ended her run.

Bouzas, meanwhile, has faced a rockier path. Aside from quarterfinal runs at the WTA 125K in Antalya and the Open de Rouen, she hasn’t progressed past the round of 16. Still finding her rhythm on the tour, the 22-year-old Spaniard has a chance to shift momentum today in what promises to be a compelling clash of form and potential.
Elina Svitolina holds a commanding 2-0 lead in her head-to-head encounters with Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. The Ukrainian first crossed paths with the young Spaniard in the second round of the 2024 Cincinnati Open, where she sealed a convincing straight-sets victory. Their most recent meeting came in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Open de Rouen, and once again, Svitolina proved too strong, dispatching Bouzas without dropping a set.
Now Svitolina heads to the Italian Open with a mental edge, while Bouzas will be eyeing her first breakthrough in this matchup.

Svitolina enters the match with strong form and experience, having won a title this season and made deep runs in major events. Bouzas, though less consistent, has shown flashes of potential with a few solid quarterfinal finishes. While Svitolina holds the edge on paper, Bouzas has the tools to challenge her if she finds her rhythm early.
