It will be the first meeting between Jasmine Paolini and Lulu Sun in any WTP competition.
Jasmine Paolini will begin her quest for the Rome Masters in the round-of-64 clash against Lulu Sun of New Zealand. The Italian ace would look to take the home support against the the world No. 46, who came from behind to beat another Italian, Giorgia Pedone 3-6 6-1 6-3 in the first round.
Paolini, the 2024 Olympic Gold Medalist, is aiming her third round at the Italian Open as she has posted a poor record in the tournament. Last year, she made into the finals of the doubles’ event but faced elimination in the second round of the singles’ event. She made into the semifinals of Stuttgart Open this year and lost to Maria Sakkari in the second round in Madrid. Paolini, the world No. 5, failed to replicate the previous year where she made into two major finals and won an Olympic gold.
Paolini can push for the glory in Rome but Lulu Sun won’t be an easy opponent. The New Zealander dropped only four games after losing the opening set and beat her Italian rivals in opening-round. Lulu was runner-up in the doubles at the WTA 125 Catalonia Open last week but her numbers in singles are poor. Third round to Indian Wells was her best run in WTA competitions in 2025.

Jasmie Paolini’s struggle in 2025 will give a slight chance to Lulu Sun to push this game into three sets. However, Paolini will find a way to crack the second round for the first time in Italian Open. The New Zealand ace had a tough first-round clash against the 20-year-old, who was given a wildcard into the main draw. Paolini, the last year’s French Open runner-up, has a better clay-court record and she will overcome the rising star from New Zealand in second round.
Prediction: Paolini to win in straight sets.
