In a match brimming with drama, FC Barcelona fought their tooth and nail to win against Real Madrid by a 3-2 margin. The match that ended on a 2-2 draw at the end of the official 90 minutes, went to the extra time in the 2025 Copa del Rey final at Estadio La Cartuja, Seville.

The extra time saw another tough fight from both sides when Madrid held on for the most parts. However, on 116th minute, Barca hammered the last nail of the match to get away with the trophy. This win marks Barcelona’s 32nd Copa del Rey title. Thus, reinforcing their dominance this season.

Pre-Match Tensions: Referee Controversy

The lead-up to the final was overshadowed by a significant controversy from the Madrid camp. Real Madrid publicly criticized the appointment of referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea. The Real Madrid TV released a video citing his past decisions which they deemed unfavorable.

The situation escalated when De Burgos emotionally addressed the media following this. He revealed the personal toll of the criticism, including its impact on his family. Real Madrid then responded by demanding of a referee change.

They even withdrew from pre-match media activities. Even so, the request denied by the Spanish Football Federation. There were rumours that Los Blancos would withdraw from the match altogether. However, despite the tensions, the match proceeded as scheduled.

Match Highlights: A Rollercoaster Affair

Barcelona took an early lead with a goal from Pedri who capitalised on a dynamic play initiated by Lamine Yamal. The Catalan side then held on for the first half. However, Real Madrid responded in the second half. Kylian Mbappe came off the bench and equalised through a free-kick.

They then took the lead through a Aurelien Tchouameni goal. However, the story didn’t end there as Ferran Torres leveled the score for Barcelona on 84th minute of the game, pushing the match into extra time. Barca won the trophy courtesy of a Jules Kounde goal which came from a defensive error from Madrid.

Controversial Officiating: Decisions Under Scrutiny

Not only the events that shadowed that pre-match environment was dramatic, but the match also was not without its contentious moments. There were several controversial decisions throughout the match which certainly looked wrongly taken by the referee.

Both teams expressed dissatisfaction with several refereeing decisions, including disputed penalty calls. There was also an incident at the end of the match where Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger threw bottles towards the referee from the bench and saw a red card as a result. He could see severe punishment for this later on.

Head coach Hansi Flick has brought on a new-look Barcelona this season which has been seen tremendous success. They already won the Spanish Super Cup earlier this year. Thay won that one also against Real Madrid like the Copa del Rey.

They are still in contention for the La Liga title. And have advanced to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, where they are set to face Inter Milan. While the road ahead will be tougher for the Flick and his men, the German coach is still focused on the potential treble
