Miami Dolphins News – Why Is Jalen Ramsey Exploring Trade Options To Get Out of Miami?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Unexpected news from Miami as the cornerback position in potential jeopardy!

The Miami Dolphins and their star cornerback Jalen Ramsey have come to a mutual decision to look for trade options just days ahead of the NFL draft. Ramsey is the current CB1 at Miami and is under contract through 2028 after having signed a three-year extension last season. However, the latest developments show that both parties seem inclined to part ways before the start of the 2025 season.

The first year of Ramsey’s extension kicks in from 2026, and his last guaranteed money of $25.1 million is due this year. Miami has already paid him around $4 million of that in roster bonus, which means any team that acquires him will have to pay him the balance amount of $21.1 million.

This is one of the more interesting decisions this offseason on the part of the Dolphins given that they are already in need of a quality cornerback to pair opposite Ramsey. The Dolphins have key holes to fill on the offensive line, and with 10 draft picks this year, they could spend the first couple of picks improving the trenches. However, if Miami does find a trade partner for Ramsey, that will place an additional burden on securing a top-quality corner from the draft.

How Would a Trade Affect Miami?

The 7-time Pro Bowler who is just 30 years of age still has plenty to offer and will be a valuable asset to any team that trades for him. In that sense, the Dolphins are set to lose out on one of their best players not just on defense, but on the entire roster.

However, the flip side to this lies in the fact that trading Ramsey now while he is still at the top of his game will generate draft capital for the team to use in their bid to rebuild the roster. The former Super Bowl champion should still be able to command a decent trade package that benefits the Dolphins, but they will have less than 10 days to find a suitor if they want to make use of the additional picks in this year’s draft.

What the Dolphins have probably realized is that Ramsey, once a leading lockdown corner, though still good, has not been playing up to a high level, hence the decision to move on while they can still get something out of him.

What Would a Trade Mean for Ramsey?

As mentioned earlier the decision to explore potential trade options is a mutual one which means Ramsey is clearly on board with the idea. A trade will give Ramsey the chance at a new beginning where he could look to re-establish himself as one of the top corners in the league once again.

NFL analyst Mike Florio seems to find the timing of this trade quite odd as he discussed the topic with Chris Simms on NBC’s Pro Football Talk. Florio who for the large part criticized the Dolphins for the large extension they signed Ramsey to last season, feels that something doesn’t quite add up and that Ramsey may be tired of the entire Tyreek Hill situation and is looking for a way out.

Whatever the case, the timing of this news does seem to suggest something has not gone down well between Ramsey and the team leading both parties to take this drastic step.
