Aston Villa face a monumental task on Tuesday as they host Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg. The English club are trailing 3-1 from the first leg in France. However, under Unai Emery, they are still hoping to make a comeback as history beckons.

Villa boss Emery insists his players must see this challenge as “a chance to write history”. And he believes that Villa Park can be the catalyst for an extraordinary comeback. The coach said, “We believe in our supporters, we believe in Villa Park and that the players can get the best performance next week.”

Home Fortunes and Tactical Focus

The numbers back Villa’s optimism in the match against PSG. The Premier League side are unbeaten at home this season in Europe. This includes a statement win over Bayern Munich in the group stage this term. Emery’s side are also on a 17-game unbeaten streak at their home – Villa Park, and they registered 11 wins among those.

Even so, the tactical puzzle is tricky. Villa must find at least two goals while managing the counter-attacking threat of PSG. This can seem like an almost impossible task considering the French side’s lethal attack this term. “Tactically we are trying to do our best with our experiences, individual and collective idea to face them,” Emery said.

Key to their hopes will be selection in attack. Ollie Watkins, who scored in his last outing, is pushing for a start. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has started in their last two matches. However, pairing him with Watkins may not come just yet.

Midfielder Morgan Rogers, who scored in the first leg, believes that it’s the Villa faithfuls who will be flooding the stadium, can tip the balance. “Massive. We can create a real atmosphere… especially in the position we’re in, the second leg being at home,” Rogers told BBC. Villa’s players are not short on belief. “There’s massive belief in the dressing room,” said Rogers.

He added, “If anyone is going to turn it around, it is going to be us.” PSG also have a history of letting go of two-goal leads in Europe — notably against Manchester United and Chelsea. Hence, Villa fans have some reason to hope. For a club dreaming of a first semi-final since 1982, Tuesday night at Villa Park might just offer the stage to dream big again.
