Canelo Alvarez is set to return to the ring on May 3, 2025, headlining a huge Cinco de Mayo weekend (It is a Mexican holiday celebrated on May 5th, commemorating the country’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The reigning WBC, WBA, and WBO super-middleweight champion will face IBF titleholder William Scull. Scull is an undefeated Cuban fighter with a 23-0 record and 9 knockouts. Known as ‘El Indomable,’ Scull recently claimed the vacant IBF belt after outpointing Vladimir Shishkin in a tightly contested bout.

Canelo’s most recent appearance in the ring came against undefeated Puerto Rican contender Edgar Berlanga on September 14, 2024, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. While Berlanga entered with an impressive knockout record and plenty of trash talk, the experience gap proved too significant to overcome. Canelo methodically broke down his opponent, scoring a knockdown in the third round and cruising to a comfortable unanimous decision victory.

The victory allowed Canelo to retain his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles. Notably absent was the IBF belt, which Canelo had been stripped of after declining to face mandatory challenger William Scull.

While not the most thrilling fight of Canelo’s career, it demonstrated his continued dominance at 168 pounds. Berlanga, despite his pre-fight confidence, struggled to land anything significant against Canelo’s tight defense and expert counterpunching.
