Bayern Legend’s Departure To Happen This Summer After 24 Seasons at the Club.

Bayern Munich’s long-serving midfielder Thomas Muller will reportedly leave the club this summer. Marking the end of an era at the Allianz Arena, Muller will end his 24 season-long journey with the Bavarians at the end of this season.

The reason behind his departure seems to be the reshaping of the squad. Additionally, reports from German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung indicate that financial considerations are playing a key role in Bayern’s decision. Muller earns over €10 million annually at the club.

However, he is no longer a regular starter. On the other hand, the club is trying to secure new contracts for Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, and Manuel Neuer. Hence, cost-cutting measures have become necessary. The German football magazine Kicker further reports that Bayern are making strategic moves to manage their wage bill.

Even though they will get a significant revenue from the upcoming Club World Cup. That will prevent Bayern from recording financial losses. The 35-year-old had hoped for a one-year extension. However, their sporting director Max Eberl reportedly informed Muller’s representatives two weeks ago that the club would not offer him a new contract.

A Historic Bayern Career Comes to an End

Muller’s impact at Bayern Munich is unparalleled. He joined the club’s youth academy in 2000 and made his senior debut under Jurgen Klinsmann in 2008. Just as soon he became a key player under Louis van Gaal the following season. Over the 24 seasons, he has set multiple records.

He became the club’s all-time appearance leader with 742 games, scoring 247 goals, and won 33 major trophies, including 12 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League crowns during that time. Former Bayern coach Hansi Flick once praised him, saying:

“There will never be anyone else like him.” Another former coach, Jupp Heynckes, called him “the most extraordinary player in German football history, along with the great Gerd Muller.”

What’s Next for Muller?

Reportedly, Muller may not join another Bundesliga club out of his respect for Bayern. However, reports also suggest that he could move to Major League Soccer (MLS), following in the footsteps of Marco Reus, who recently joined LA Galaxy.

The 2026 World Cup is set to be hosted in North America. Hence, an MLS move now would be well-timed both for his career and marketability. Before his departure, Bayern fans could see Muller in a farewell match. Fans would certainly hope for it to be the Champions League final in Munich.
