Borussia Dortmund will look to keep their European hopes alive as they welcome Mainz 05 at home in a crucial Bundesliga clash on Sunday. Dortmund have been struggling recently. As a result, they’ve seen a drop to seventh place in the league table with 35 points.

On the other hand, Mainz are in a strong position for Champions League qualification, sitting in third place with 45 points. Dortmund are coming into this match following a 2-0 defeat to RB Leipzig before the international break. Thus, extending their poor run under Niko Kovac.

So far, the coach has lost four of his six league games coming in charge. Even though they created several scoring opportunities against Leipzig, Dortmund failed to convert. Whereas, Mainz secured a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Freiburg with 10 men in their last game before the international break.

Dortmund are approaching this match without midfielders Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nmecha. However, Nmecha is expected to be absent only for a brief time due to illness. To make it work, the coach might drop Waldemar Anton into a midfield role beside Pascal Gross.

They’ll be providing defensive cover in front of centre-backs Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck. In final third, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Karim Adeyemi should start on the flanks. Julian Brandt could start on a supporting role behind striker Serhou Guirassy.

This could see the coach line up Moritz Jenz, Andreas Hanche-Olsen, and Danny da Costa in the centre of the defense.

Additionally, wing-back Philipp Mwene will also be serving out a suspension. This could see Silvan Widmer and Anthony Caci start as wide defenders. In the engine room, Kaishu Sano and Nadiem Amiri could be brought in to provide balance.
