Nottingham Forest Football Club, established in 1865, has a glorious history like many big clubs in Europe. Despite Nottingham roaming around the lower ranks in the league and even lower domestic competitions, their most notable consecutive European Cup wins in 1979 and 1980 are etched in history.

However, this season, they’ve peaked so wonderfully, under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, that they’re set to qualify for the top European competition for the first time after 1980. Forest transformed from survivors in domestic tournaments to fighting for a spot in European competitions.

Nottingham Forest embarked on their maiden European Cup campaign in the 1978-79 season. Even though they were newcomers to the competition, they displayed exceptional determination and skill throughout the tournament. The journey concluded in a 1-0 victory against Malmo FF in the final, which was held in Munich. This win marked their emergence on the European stage.

Nottingham Forest defied all expectations when they retained the European Cup in the 1979-80 season. After a hard-fought season, they faced Hamburger SV in the final and secured a 1-0 win in Madrid. This back-to-back success put their name among Europe’s elite clubs.

Nottingham Forest’s consecutive European Cup victories is still a unique achievement for any club in English football. However, that was the last time they appeared in the Champions League, known as the European Cup back then.

They later appeared thrice – in 1983-84 season, 1984-85 season, and 1995-96 season – in the Europa League, known as UEFA Cup back then. They reached the quarter-final once, the semi-final another time, and got knocked out of the first round the other time. Their success during this period inspired future generations, like this season.

In recent times, Nottingham Forest has shown a resurgence in ambition. Especially, this season under coach Santo, the team has climbed the Premier League standings swiftly. They’re currently sitting in third place in the Premier League table with 10 games left to be played in the league. Notably, they’ve also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals recently.

As the club strives to echo past successes, keeping their past European Cup wins in mind, they need to keep their form intact. Especially considering there’s only a difference of five points between Nottingham Forest in third and Brighton in seventh place. Hence, they cannot let up if they want to repeat history in Europe.
