Doncic has been sidelined since the Christmas Day game due to a calf injury.
The NBA trade window had been all about Jimmy Butler and his next destination until the last week’s shocking news turned everything upside down. The Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The trade was so out of the blue that even Luka and Anthony Davis were reportedly caught off guard.
Luka, who hasn’t played since Christmas Day due to a calf injury, was left stunned by the Mavs’ move. His calf strain kept him sidelined for over a month this season which led to his snub from this year’s All-Star roster.
“This deal materialized in the shadows … LeBron James had no idea this was coming. Anthony Davis had no idea this was coming. I’m told Luka Doncic is still stunned about this trade.”@ShamsCharania on the Anthony Davis-Luka Doncic trade between the Lakers and Mavericks pic.twitter.com/Hp4bL3UX2M

The reason behind Mavs’ shocking move has reportedly been Luka’s conditioning. The 25-year-old was pushing 270 pounds and has been in and out due to frequent injuries which prompted Mavs to look ahead.

When asked about the team’s decision to trade Doncic, Mavs GM Nico Harrison explained that securing a defensive star is the missing piece they need to win the championship.
“I believe that defense wins championships,” Harrison told ESPN. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”
