WTA Madrid Open 2025 Round-2 Results: Iga Swiatek Gets Revenge on Eala, Jelena Ostapenko Faces Shock Loss

Terrific Thursday presented some intriguing results.

The 2025 WTA Mutua Madrid Open continued with Round of 64 action on Thursday. Some of the world’s biggest stars were in action, including defending Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek and Stuttgart Open 2025 winner Jelena Ostapenko. Both players came up against familiar faces, but got varied results. Keep reading to know what went down.

Swiatek is only behind Aryna Sabalenka in the current WTA Rankings. However, the Polish sensation has not had the best of 2025 seasons. With three semifinal and three quarterfinal finishes, Swiatek is searching for her first trophy this year. One of her arch nemeses, Jelena Ostapenko has reached six finals this year including singles and doubles – winning three championships.

Iga Swiatek (2) vs Alexandra Eala

The two players had faced one another just a month ago, when Eala pulled off one of the upsets of the Miami Open. She made a strong start in Madrid too, breaking Swiatek’s serve in the very first game. It was a weak game by both players on serve, but Eala remained steadfast when it came to saving break points. She was able to match the former No. 1 from the baseline, and converted 2/2 break points to take the opening set off Swiatek.

Unlike the encounter in Miami Gardens, Swiatek produced the clutch tennis required to shift momentum in her favour. She started hitting more first serves, found more aces, and outhit Eala from the back of the court. Swiatek’s topspin also had more revs on it, meaning that it was challenging for the Filipino southpaw to generate her own pace. Her serving masterclass resumed in Set-3, closing out the match in just over two hours in the process.

Result: Swiatek def. Eala 4-6 6-4 6-2.

Jelena Ostapenko (23) vs Anastasija Sevastova

In a battle of power vs patience, Stuttgart Open champion Jelena Ostapenko took on Latvian compatriot Anastasija Sevastova on Court-4. Ostapenko grabbed a Porsche last week, but fell short in her bid to grab a victory on Thursday. Such is the style of the former French Open champion – while it can produce some of the best tennis on one night, there can be errors galore on another.

Sevastova, who was coming back from a long layoff due to personal commitments and injuries, drew the errors out of her higher ranked opponent. But with Ostapenko serving 8 double faults, a chunk of her work was already done. She had a first serve percentage of over 70% in both sets, leading to a composed victory.

On a night when breaks of serve were taking place throughout (eight in Set-1, four in Set-2), the World No. 18 was a tad bit too inconsistent. Sevastova needed just over an hour and a half to book her spot in Round-3.

Result: Sevastova def. Ostapenko 7-6(2) 6-2.
