Wings vs Liberty: Arike Ogunbowale and Paige Bueckers’ Combined 40-Point Performance Guides Dallas to Upset Over New York

On Monday, July 28, Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale combined a total of 40 points to help the Dallas Wings pull off an upset over the New York Liberty at 92-82. This was the first time both teams came against each other in the ongoing 2025 WNBA season. The victor pushed the Wings to a win-loss tally of 8-19 while marking the second straight upset for the reigning champions. Before this game, New York suffered a 101-99 defeat to the Los Angeles Sparks.

The night saw Ogunbowale and Bueckers dropping 20 points apiece. While the former tallied one rebound and 14 assists, the first overall pick had six rebounds and four assists. Apart from them, Luisa Geiselsoder chipped in 14 points, three rebounds, and two steals in 23 minutes. Shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc tied her season-high score.

On the other hand, Jonquel Jones dropped 18 points, seven rebounds, and two assists for the Liberty. Sabrina Ionescu came up with 17 points, four rebounds, and five assists while Isabelle Harrison and Stephanie Talbot chipped in 10 points each.

Breanna Stewart and Nyara Sabally’s Absence Heavily Impact New York Liberty

The defending champions were without their star Breanna Stewart due to a right leg injury, while Nyara Sabally was rested. Surprisingly, Kennedy Burke was also added to the team’s injury report after her exit from Saturday’s game with a lower-body cramp. Despite missing three players, the defending champions had a pool of talent to handle the lower-seeded Wings. However, the way Liberty played for most of the game couldn’t be even summed up with a word like ‘embarrassing’.

They trailed their counterparts 31-19 by the end of the first quarter and surrendered at 32 points by the end of the second. After entering the third quarter at 63-36, the Liberty pushed beyond their limitations and ended the quarter at 85-62. In the final period, the Wings could only score seven points, but the way out of the deep hole seemed too far for the Liberty, and they ended up on the defeating side at 92-82.
