Daniel Jones to provide competition to Anthony Richardson
The Indianapolis Colts have made a big move bringing in former New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daniel Jones on a one-year deal. Jones, who had the option of vying for a starting position in Minnesota, opted to do the same with the Colts instead.
Jones’ new contract with the Colts will earn him $14 million out of which $13.15 million is guaranteed money. The deal can go up to $17.7 million based on various incentives as per reports.
Former Vikings QB Daniel Jones is finalizing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts, per sources. Jones had a chance to return to Minnesota, but now becomes the challenger to the Colts’ former first-round pick Anthony Richardson.

As far as the Colts are concerned, this contract means they have signed a reliable signal caller, one who has enough experience as a starter in this league, but they did not have to break the bank for him. Having said that, $14 million for a potential backup quarterback is a lot of money which indicates that Jones will get his fair chance to prove himself.
On the other hand, this is one of the best deals Jones could have gotten given his career trajectory that has taken a dip after being viewed in high regard early in his career.
During the NFL Combine, Colts’ general manager Chris Ballard had put the idea out there that they would be signing a new quarterback to provide quality competition to Anthony Richardson. True to his word, the Colts have done just that and now the two signal callers will have to fight it out during training camp and preseason to see which one of them wins the starting job.

Indianapolis drafted Richardson with the number 4 pick in 2023 and instantly made him their starter. However, the former Florida Gators quarterback has found the going tough at the highest level of the sport. As a matter of fact, Richardson has played in only 15 games and has an 8-7 record with a career passing percentage of just a shade over 50%. Moreover, his 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions just aren’t cutting it for Indianapolis.
The Colts expect much more consistency from Richardson at this point of his career. Having already been in the league for two seasons, it is his decision making that has prevented his growth. Signing Jones will not only provide a new level of competition, but it should also likely bring out the best in the 2023 first round draftee.
Daniel Jones was signed by the New York Giants in 2019 with the 6th overall pick. Over the course of his six seasons in the league, Jones has been unable to lead the Giants to a winning season, barring the 2022 campaign. He holds a 24−44−1 record and has generally been disappointing.
After being benched in November 2024, Jones requested to be released, which was granted by the Giants. Jones signed with the Minnesota Vikings but never took the field. His move to the Colts is now a fresh start for the young 27-year-old and it will be interesting to see how the quarterback battle shapes up between him and Richardson over the next few months prior to the start of the 2025 season.
