Will Christian McCaffrey Play Today? Huge Update Regarding the Availability of the 49ers Running Back

49ers star RB status with calf issue ahead of Seahawks clash

The San Francisco 49ers enter their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks with one of their biggest stars under the cloud of uncertainty. Running back Christian McCaffrey was listed as questionable on the team’s Thursday injury report due to a calf issue that surfaced late in the week. Head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted the problem “appeared late,” raising fresh doubts about his availability for Sunday night. Yet McCaffrey himself tried to calm the storm, telling David Lombardi, “I feel great about where I’m at… I am focused on this week and playing Seattle on Sunday.” Most recently, Adam Schefter reported that McCaffrey is expected to play today against the Seahawks, a major development that could completely shift the momentum of the game.

Christian McCaffrey’s Availability for Season Opener against the Seahawks

The 49ers have made it clear that gameday status won’t be finalized until 90 minutes before kickoff, meaning McCaffrey’s participation will remain uncertain until the last possible moment. After being limited in Thursday’s practice, he did not practice at all on Friday, fueling speculation that the calf injury occurred during training sessions. San Francisco has already signed Brian Robinson Jr. to bolster the running back rotation alongside rookie Isaac Guerendo, just in case McCaffrey is sidelined.

Adding to the team’s injury woes, wide receiver Jordan Watkins (ankle) and running back Jordan James (finger) are both doubtful, leaving Shanahan with difficult roster decisions. For McCaffrey, though, his own words suggested confidence: “Sometimes when you don’t practice, things get blown out of proportion… I feel great.”

Christian McCaffrey Stats

When healthy, McCaffrey is the heartbeat of the 49ers’ offense. A three-time Pro Bowler and the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, he led the league in rushing yards the same season, amassing over 2,000 scrimmage yards with 21 total touchdowns. His value to the team is reflected in his $38 million deal signed last year, making him the highest-paid running back in football.

The contrast with 2024 is stark. After missing the preseason and season opener due to calf and Achilles issues, he debuted in Week 10. Just four games later, a right knee PCL injury against the Buffalo Bills ended his season, limiting him to only 348 scrimmage yards and no touchdowns. Compared to his historic 2023 campaign, it was a cruel fall that still lingers in fans’ memories.

As the 49ers prepare for Seattle, McCaffrey’s presence, or absence, could define the tone of their season. The franchise has been built to contend, but without their star running back, they risk starting 2025 on shaky ground. For now, the final answer will arrive just before kickoff.

But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
