However, one of the surprising features in their second game on April 15, 2025 was the fact that members of the Los Angeles Dodgers team were wearing blue colored caps with the word “B” signifying Brooklyn scripted on them. The Los Angeles Dodgers were wearing Brooklyn caps on April 15, 2025 to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day. The late Jackie Robinson was the first African-American MLB player, who broke the color barrier on April 15, 1947 by debuting for the Brooklyn Dodgers. That was the former name of the Los Angeles Dodgers before they relocated to Los Angeles and started using their present name since 1958. April 15, 2025 marked the 78th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s MLB debut. Moreover, April 15 in MLB has always been celebrated as Jackie Robinson Day since 2004. Accordingly players of all 30 teams in the MLB wear jersey #42 on April 15 as a tribute to the late Jackie Robinson.

The 78th anniversary of Jackie Robinson Day was attended by several notable guests like Robinson’s oldest granddaughter Sonya Pankey Robinson who spoke about her grandfather’s legacy. Another granddaughter Ayo Robinson also joined the event Notably, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a legendary former National Basketball Association (NBA) star also showed up at the event as per ABC 7 Eyewitness News. He joined both the Dodgers and the Rockies players in surrounding Jackie Robinson’s statue in the centerfield as a tribute to him before the game started. Moreover, Kareem stated that Jackie Robinson has continued to be a lifelong inspiration for him.He revealed (via ABC 7 Eyewitness News) –
“He meant excellence, giving your all, giving your best, and for all the detractors that are out there, just ignore them and keep on.”
Dave Roberts, the Los Angeles Dodgers manager also honored the late Jackie Robinson. He said (via Yahoo! News),
“Jackie knew things were bigger than him. He had to stay the course, remain steadfast, to give people an opportunity”.
Dave Roberts and some of the Dodgers members, especially Mookie Betts has earlier faced criticism after they accepted the White House visit from President Donald Trump after they won the 2024 World Series. Notably, Dave Roberts had earlier stated that he would not go to the White House even if the team wins the World Series as per the Yardbarker. Likewise, Mookie Betts had avoided visiting the White House in 2018, when he won the World Series as a member of the Boston Red Sox as per Yahoo! News.
