Kris Bryant Injury Update: What Happened to Rockies $182 Million Star?

Another season, another IL stint for Kris Bryant.

Kris Bryant’s rocky tenure in Colorado just hit another familiar speed bump. The Rockies placed the former NL MVP on the 10-day injured list Monday with lumbar degenerative disc disease, a recurring lower back issue that’s become an all-too-common theme in his stint with the team. The move is retroactive to April 13.

Back problems have trailed Bryant since he arrived in Denver on a massive seven-year, $182 million deal ahead of the 2022 season. This latest IL stint marks his ninth in less than three seasons with the Rockies. Bryant last suited up on Saturday, going 0-for-4. He’s off to a sluggish start in 2025, hitting just .154 with no homers through 11 games, mostly in a designated hitter role.

When healthy, Bryant has flashed his All-Star pedigree, but “healthy” has been the exception, not the rule. Since joining the Rockies, he’s appeared in just 159 of a possible 486 games, roughly 32 percent, and hasn’t played more than 80 games in a single season. His OPS with Colorado sits at .695, a sharp drop from the .886 mark he posted with the Cubs across seven standout seasons.

Before signing with the Rockies, Bryant had already built a resume most players would dream of: four All-Star selections, a World Series title, and an MVP trophy. He also made a 51-game stop in San Francisco at the end of 2021 before landing his big deal in Denver.

In a series of corresponding roster moves, the Rockies selected the contract of catcher Braxton Fulford from Triple-A Albuquerque and transferred pitcher Jeff Criswell to the 60-day IL. Kyle Farmer was penciled in at DH for Monday night’s matchup against the Dodgers, while top prospect Adael Amador drew the start at second base.
