The Phillies may not have had much to celebrate in their 10–4 loss to the Giants on Monday night, but Bryce Harper turned his first plate appearance into a moment to remember, for reasons far beyond baseball.

As Bryce Harper stepped up to the batter’s box in the first inning, fans noticed something unusual: he was holding a bright blue bat. It wasn’t a new bat (since those are in fashion) nor a style choice – it was the reveal. Bryce Harper and his wife, Kayla, are expecting their fourth child, and the blue bat meant one thing: it’s a boy.

The whole thing was orchestrated with a little help from shortstop Trea Turner. Harper had asked his teammate to be the secret-keeper, handing over a pink and blue bat before the game and letting Turner deliver the right one before his first at-bat.

“I was confused at first, but I think he wanted to share that moment with us,” Turner said. “I think it was pretty cool. He’s a pretty creative guy.”

Turner even admitted to messing with Harper a bit before the reveal. “I got a text message with the gender,” Turner said. “I picked up the pink one and swung it around a little bit. He thought he was having a girl, so I had to mess with him a little bit.”

Then came the handoff. “Sure enough, it was a boy. I ended up handing him the blue one, and he was pretty happy.”

The Harpers – already parents to son Krew and daughters Brooklyn and Kamryn, are now expecting their second boy, rounding out what Turner jokingly called a “complete family.”

“Like I said, he thought he was having a girl,” Turner added. “So when I was messing with him, he was like, ‘I knew it was a girl.’ Then, I handed him the blue one. I said, ‘You’re not going to need that pink one.’ He was just excited. I think he would have been excited either way, but now, he’s got two of each.”
