Why Are Jannik Sinner and Coach Darren Cahill Parting Ways Despite Being a Winning Combination?

After an amazing two weeks of tennis at the All England Club, Jannik Sinner closed out the Championships with a 4-set win over his biggest rival, Carlos Alcaraz, to lift his first Wimbledon title. In doing so, the 23-year-old also became the first Italian player to win the prestigious tournament.

Following his victory, the ever-so humble and gracious Sinner not only had kind words of encouragement for Alcaraz and his team but also recognized the contributions of each and every member of his own team.

For Sinner, however, his coach Darren Cahill has played a huge role in his development, not only as a tennis player on the court, but also helping him shape his life off the court. Cahill, though, is expected to end his time as Sinner’s coach by the end of the year.

Why Sinner and Cahill Are Ending Their Partnership?

With everything according to plan, and with both player and coach having nothing but the utmost respect for each other, the fact remains that Cahill would be leaving Sinner’s team at the end of the year. Which begs the question as to why?

At the start of the new season, ahead of the Australian Open, the 4-time major winner confirmed that he and Cahill would go their separate ways at the end of 2025, citing his coach’s desire to retire from coaching. It is believed that the nearly 60-year-old Cahill wishes to take a step back from tennis and spend more quality time with his family.

The Australian coach, who has worked with several top tennis players on tour earlier in his career, joined Sinner’s coaching team in January 2022. Since then, he has been a central figure in helping the Italian’s game reach such a high level.

The pair, who have now been working with each other for the past three years, have seen plenty of success on tour, with the most important being Sinner’s 4 Grand Slam titles. That said, there now seems to be a twist in the tale following the world number one’s latest victory at SW19.

Wimbledon 2025 Final Bet

According to reports, Sinner and Cahill had a bet before the Italian’s final against Alcaraz. The bet was that if Sinner won the final, he would get to decide whether Cahill would continue as his coach beyond 2025.

When Cahill was asked about his split with Sinner after the Wimbledon final, the Australian only had this to say.

“I don’t want to answer this. You know what? You just need to ask Jannik that.”

Later, the same Italian reporter took Cahill’s advice and posed the question to Sinner, who went on to explain the situation. As per Sinner, he had a conversation with Cahill on Saturday night, and it was decided that if he won Wimbledon, he would get to decide whether Cahill would remain as his coach.

“It depends, whether I want to tell the truth or not. We had a bet before the final. He said (Cahill): ‘If you win tomorrow, you can decide whether or not I stay. Now the choice is mine. I’ve always looked for a person who is honest, a person who gives me a lot, not necessarily only on the tennis court, but (about) how to live.”

There is still plenty of time before the 2025 season winds down. But, with the latest development that has come to light, we may still see the familiar face of Darren Cahill sitting in the Italian’s box in 2026, even though he may be limited to only the crucial tournaments throughout the calendar year.
