Who is Nikoloz Basilashvili, the Georgian Tennis Player Who Knocked Lorenzo Musetti Out of Wimbledon 2025?

Sankalp Harikrishnan

Basilashvili def. Musetti 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1.

33-year-old Nikoloz Basilashvili possibly caused the upset of the men’s Wimbledon Championships 2025 so far, as he took out No. 7 seed Lorenzo Musetti in dramatic fashion on Tuesday. The Georgian produced a relentless attack and left his Italian opponent with no answers in the Round of 128 clash. Basilashvili struck 15 aces and 48 winners en route to a four set victory.

Ranked No. 126 in the world, Basilashvili started the match on a high note. He pushed Musetti from side to side, and the 2024 Wimbledon semifinalist had no answers to the shot making. As a result, he became the third Top-10 player in the men’s draw to drop out of the competition in the opening round – after Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev.

Normally adept at baseline exchanges and using the slice to his advantage, Musetti found himself on the attacking end for merely 17% of the match. He hit 21 winners and 29 unforced errors. On the other hand, Basilashvili brushed aside second set jitters to inch closer to the baseline and prevent Musetti from dictating rallies. “I was struggling to feel comfortable on the court from the beginning,” said the 23-year-old who led the ATP Tour for grass court wins in 2024.
