Porter’s NBA career came to an abrupt end due to a major sports betting scandal.
Former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, who played a short stint in the NBA, is set to face jail time after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. According to several reports, Porter is scheduled for sentencing in his criminal case on Wednesday.
Here’s everything you need to know about Jontay Porter, his career, and the controversy that led to his ban from NBA.
Jontay Porter had brief stints with Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors in the NBA. He played one season at the University of Missouri before entering the 2019 NBA Draft, where he went undrafted.
Despite this, he eventually signed a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2020 and spent time with their NBA G League affiliate Memphis Hustle. However, he was waived by the Grizzlies after one season and had to sit out the 2021-22 season.
After few brief stints in G League, Porter joined the Toronto Raptors in 2023, but his role with the team was limited. He played a total of 37 games in the NBA, averaging 3.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists.
Porter’s career came to an abrupt end due to a major sports betting scandal. In early 2024, an NBA investigation revealed that Porter had been involved in a scheme to manipulate games to benefit sports bettors.

Porter was found to have placed 13 bets on NBA games between January and March 2024. Some of these bets were made against his own team. But the most shocking part of the investigation came when it was discovered that Porter intentionally left two games early, claiming injuries or illnesses that were later deemed false.
The NBA revealed that these withdrawals were part of a plan to rig the games for his betting co-conspirators.

Porter’s involvement in the scheme led to his lifetime ban from the NBA in April 2024, making him the first player to be banned since 1954.
Porter now faces a potential prison sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. His sentencing hearing is set for Wednesday, and he faces a sentence of 3-4 years in prison.
