The long-term Mavericks assistant coach, Darrell Armstrong was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Saturday.

Amidst the injuries, a new controversy struck the Dallas side. The long-term Mavericks assistant coach, Darrell Armstrong was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Saturday as per Grant Afseth.

Darrell Armstrong is a former basketball player who played 14 years in the NBA as a point guard. After going undrafted in the 1991 NBA Draft, Armstrong was signed up as a free-agent by the Orlando Magic in 1994-1995 season. In his career, Armstrong played for the New Orleans Hornets, Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers and New Jersey Nets before.
His most successful year came in 1999 with the Orlando Magic, where he averaged 13.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game. He was named the Most Improved Player (1999) and the Sixth Man of the Year (1999) in the same season. He was also inducted into the Orlando Magic Hall of Fame in February, 2020.
Armstrong started his coaching career in January, 2009 with the Dallas Mavericks. His first role was an assistant coach for the player development. Since then, Armstrong has stayed with the Mavericks and was also part of the 2011 NBA Championship victory.
Darrell Armstrong was arrested early Saturday morning at 3:45 am as the officers responded to a call for service.
On Feb. 15, 2025, at about 3:45 a.m., officers responded to a call for service in the 1000 block of Ross Ave.,” Dallas PD confirmed to DallasHoopsjournal.com.
In the early reports coming out, the victim and the suspect knew each other. The suspect hit the victim with a gun and threatened to shoot. Armstrong has been placed under administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings.
“The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident,” Mavericks issued a statement after the incident.
